Torpedoes are deadly weapons in World of Warships, so you want to be able to avoid them the best you can. Let’s have a look at a few ways to avoid torpedoes, and get hit by them less.
When you know there are enemy ships with torpedoes lurking in range the best way to avoid them is to avoid them early. You can do this by constantly changing your course and speed, to throw off their aim. Chances are, by doing this the torpedoes won’t even come close, and you won’t have to avoid them at the last second. This tip applies the most for Battleships, as they can easily get zoomed in while in a long-range gunfight, and have to avoid the torpedoes when they are extremely close and dead on target.
Avoiding Close Torpedoes
Either your enemy has predicted your changes in course well, or you haven’t moved enough, you will have torpedoes on target, close to you, only just detected. You have a few options:
- Turn towards the torpedoes
- Turn away from the torpedoes
- Try and outrun the torpedoes
- Slow down before the torpedoes
The first two options turn the ship so that it either fits between the torpedo spread or takes fewer torpedoes. The third one tries to keep turning to a minimum so that it does not lose speed, and can possibly outrun the torpedoes, or only clip a few on the back. The fourth slows down or stops the ship to let the torpedoes go past in front.
Here are four scenarios where one different option is the best for each one.
In this scenario, the best choice was to turn towards the torpedoes, as the ship was already slightly turned towards them before. It could not turn away from the torpedoes, as this would have just given them a full broadside hit. It could not outrun the torpedoes, as it was too far back, and it could not slow down or stop as the ship was too far forwards.
In this scenario, the best choice was to turn away from the torpedoes, as the ship was already turned slightly away from them. It could not turn towards them, as this would have made all the torpedoes hit. It could not outrun the torpedoes, as it was too far back, and it could not slow down or stop as the ship was too far forwards.
In this scenario, the best choice was to outrun the torpedoes, as the ship was already far enough forwards. It could not turn away from them, as this would have made it hit a few torpedoes, the same for turning away from them. It could not slow down or stop as the ship was too far forwards.
In this scenario, the best choice was to slow down then stop, as the ship was already far away from the torpedoes. It could not turn away from them, as this would have made it run into the torpedoes, the same for turning away from them. It could not speed up as this would have made it hit every single torpedo.
Early Warning Systems
Now that you know what to do when torpedoes are detected, it’s always good to have extra time to react to them. We can do this with early warning systems. Here are some of them:
A must have when in a smoke screen with destroyers nearby, as this will detect the torpedoes before they enter your smoke. It also helps when not in a smoke screen, as it spots the torpedoes earlier.
This captain ability detects torpedoes 20% earlier, which can be great if you need those extra few seconds to react to torpedoes.
Whether from an aircraft carrier or a ship, if an enemy ship is detected by aircraft and fires torpedoes, those torpedoes are detected instantly. Also, if the aircraft fly within a certain range of undetected torpedoes, they will become detected.
That’s all for the torpedo avoiding guide for World of Warships!
